PS5: New firmware brings little performance

With the big September firmware, the PS5 has gotten new functions donated. The update also seems to bring smaller performance boosts for individual games, as evidenced by the current Digital Foundry Direct Weekly Show. In occasional scenarios, all PS5 models with the new firmware seem faster than before, explains Hardware Expert Richard Leadbetter. He complements that the performance differences are only low. Accordingly, the new PlayStation 5 firmware ensures that individual games such as Control and Devil May Cry 5 run between two and three percent faster than under the previous system updates. The meant a higher frame rate of 1 to 2 fps.

The hardware experts have therefore randomly encountered the improvements. In the video, you declare that you first wanted to test the new PS5 model, which is equipped with a revised cooling system, among other things. At the end of the test, they have not encountered significant differences between the new and launch model of the PlayStation 5. However, during the test, they noticed that the old PS5 (Buy Now) minimally better than the new version.

As it finally turned out, that was due to different firmware versions that were installed on the two consoles. On the Launch model already the new firmware ran, on the new console an older version. After Digital Foundry finally played the new firmware on the revised PS5 model, the smaller performance advantages were suddenly here. Which features the new PS5 firmware also contains, you will learn from the linked article. The highlights include a memory expansion by an additional SSD.
